BULLETIN BOARD NOTICE

Dear Brothers & Sisters:

IBEW LOCAL 2150/JEROME CEEL, FOUNDER

HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST

A Chance to Win $1,000

Daughters and sons of L.U. 2150 members in good standing have a chance to win a $1,000 prize by entering the IBEW Local 2150/Jerome Ceel, Founder, High School Essay Contest.  Students who are in grades 9 through 12 as of September 1, 2016, are eligible to submit an essay.  The theme of the essay is, “How Has My Parent’s Union Job Helped My Family Raise Their Children?”

The contest is named in honor of Jerome (Jerry) Ceel who was one of the founding members of L.U. 2150 in 1964.  Jerry was elected our first business manager in 1964 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1983.  Until his death in 2004, he was a strong believer in education.  Growing up during the Great Depression of the 1930s required him to quit high school to help support his single mother raise his three younger sisters.  He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939 and sent most of his earnings home to mom.  He volunteered for the United States Army in 1940 and became a member of the First Special Service Force in 1942.  After three years of combat, he came home like thousands of veterans looking for work.  He was able to obtain what was equivalent to a GED, became a lineman in 1950, and raised his family on union wages.  Although he was a voracious reader of history until his death, his one regret was never being able to attain a formal education.  He made sure his sons attained college degrees.

Jerry Ceel’s respect for education was based on the right of people to live and work in dignity and is what leads to this essay contest.  In order for your child to enter, he/she must submit his/her essay no later than June 1, 2017.  Contestants must list the high school they attend and their grade as of September 1, 2016.  Essays should be approximately 650 words.  The essay winner will be announced at the August 2017 Executive Board meeting and published in the September State of the Union newsletter.
